How to Jailbreak iPhone and iPad Running iOS 5 GM With Redsn0w [Tethered Jailbreak]

This article is for Apple developers who want to jailbreak the GM release of iOS 5. Apple recently released iOS GM for Apple developers after the iPhone 4S as it was expected. Experts consider it as the final prototype before the actual release on 12th October.

The below mentioned method is a tethered jailbreak, and you have to tether boot your device every time it reboots.

Step by Step Guide

  1. Launch Redsn0w: The first step is to launch Redsn0w on your computer. The screen will appear asking about firmware file.
  2. Select a firmware file: Redsn0w will ask you to select a firmware file. You can select iOS 5 beta 7 firmware file that you downloaded from Apple’s Developer Portal.
  3. Let it Process: As soon as you click on “next”, the next screen will show that redsn0w is processing your request. You may notice a patching kernel message. After sometime, Redsn0w will show you a message about successfully recognizing your firmware.
  4. Install Cydia: You may see four options on the next screen. Select the first option ‘Install Cydia’. You may also use “just boot tethered right now” if you want to perform tethered boot at the same time.
  5. DFU mode: RedSnOw will than further process your device and will switch your device to DFU mode. It will go through the exploit and will download all Jailbreaking data. You can have a look at our guide to know how to put your iPhone or iPad into DFU mode.
  6. Let RedSnOw Complete: After successfully switching to DFU mode, let redsn0w process your device until it finishes. Now you can reboot your device and are done with Jailbreaking your iOS 5 GM with tethered boot.

As it is a tethered jailbreak, you have to connect your device to computer every time you want a tethered boot for your device. The news is that untethered jailbreak will only be available for original iOS 5 release. So for iOS 5 GM, you only have a choice of tethered boot.
