How to Delete Default Mac OS X Apps Like Safari, FaceTime And Others

Mac OS X users know this very well that Finder does not allow you to delete Safari, Mail, FaceTime, Chess, Photo Booth, Stickies, QuickTime, or any of the other default Mac OS X apps. In addition to this, if you try to uninstall these apps by trashing them, you will be prompted with a message saying: ‘”Safari.app” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by Mac OS X.’

safari-cant-be-deleted

This is not entirely true. Apple merely tries to stop you from delete the default apps. However, if you are persistent, there exists a way to delete the default Mac OS X apps.  Deleting apps such as Safari and QuickTime Player is generally not recommended as they might be used by a lot of other apps and elements to function properly. But this is not the case for other apps like Stickies, Chess, FaceTime, and Photo Booth.

How to Delete Default Mac OS X Apps Like Safari, FaceTime And Others

Warning: Please be aware that after you delete the default apps, there is no undoing that. After you delete the app, it will be permanently removed and could also result in abnormal system behavior. So until and unless you know exactly what you are doing and why, we would not recommend you to delete the default Mac OS X apps. You may want to perform a backup before proceeding:

  • Launch the Terminal which is located in /Applications/Utilities/
  • Punch in cd /Applications/ on the command line to go to the Applications directory.
  • Now you can start deleting the default apps.
  • Please note that you will not get any confirmation for the deletion, the app will simply get removed.

The following commands only work when used from within the /Applications/ directory.

Delete Safari: sudo rm -rf Safari.app/

Delete Mail: sudo rm -rf Mail.app/

Delete FaceTime: sudo rm -rf FaceTime.app/

Delete QuickTime Player: sudo rm -rf QuickTime Player.app/

Delete Stickies: sudo rm -rf Stickies.app/

Delete Chess: sudo rm -rf Chess.app/

Delete Photo Booth: sudo rm -rf Photo Booth.app

That’s all there is to it.

How to Improve the Home Screen Safari Bookmark Icons on iPhone or iPad

Safari Bookmark Icon

Safari bookmark icons for pages that contain more text and less images look pretty ugly on the home screen of iPhone or iPad. One way to improve it would be to have an image show up for the bookmark, instead of some snapshot of the bookmark page. In this article we will explain how to improve the home screen Safari bookmark icons on iPhone or iPad.

How to Improve the Home Screen Safari Bookmark Icons on iPhone or iPad

Fortunately, your iOS has a feature that customizes the look of your home screen bookmarks. Following are the steps that you need to do:

  • First you may open Mobile Safari and visit a page that you want to put into your home screen as a bookmark icon.

Safari Bookmark Icon

  • Now as shown in the above image tap the encircled button i.e., bookmark button. The next screen will ask you to add the current page into your Home Screen.
  • Now, selecting the Add to Home Screen option will only put the faded screenshot of the page and will definitely look weird among the other icons.

Safari Bookmark Icon

  • So, before tapping on the bookmark button, try zooming into a specific image of the webpage. Choose which ever you think would be best image for the icon and zoom in. In my case, I zoomed into the picture of Land Rover.
  • Now you may tap on bookmark button and choose the option “Add to Home”

Safari Bookmark Icon

  • The device will automatically choose the zoomed image as the icon.
  • Considering the other techniques, try this out and find the improved results.

This method really changes the look of the icon and improves the icon resolution as well. Currently it is the perfect solution if you want to optimize your bookmark icon for better look and feel.

How to Enable Internet Access on iPad

iPad Safari

iPad will automatically get online and connect to the internet once you start using any app that requires internet access. In this article we will explain how to efficiently access internet from your iPad. There are two ways to access internet from iPad, via a WiFi or via a 3G Mobile Network. In this article we will explain how to enable internet access on iPad.

Joining Wi-Fi Network for Internet Access

In order to turn on the WiFi on your iPad:

  • Select Settings and turn the WiFi on. For this pupose you need to join a WiFi network.
  • After turning the WiFi on, the iPad will automatically run a search to locate all the networks available within the range.
  • There are many options available depending upon your location. In case you are at home, you will be required to select your home network and enter the security details to get the access.
  • If you are at some public place, you will be either prompted to enter the security code or it will have no such option, in such a scenario simply connect to the internet.
  • Otherwise you can always ask the WiFi service provider for the details in order to get connected. This will automatically connect you to the WiFi service on your iPad whenever you are within the network range without you having to enter the details every time.
  • If there is more than one network present in the range, then the iPad will automatically connect to the network it used the last time.
  •  A WiFi indicator is located on the status bar at the top of the screen. This indicates the strength of the signal. The signal is stronger if more bars are visible and vice versa.

Joining a 3G Mobile Network for Internet

If you want to use the 3G network on your iPad, you will be required to sign up for a Mobile Service Provider. Consult your local service providers for price and availability schedules. This service can be altered or even cancelled any time you want to.

Turn the Duplicate SSID’s off for WiFi

There is a minor issue with the iPad recognizing dual-channel routers. This is the one that makes use of the 802.11a and 802.11 n simultaneously if the two networks are using the same name. Thus in order to prevent your iPad from getting into any such confusion, you need to change the SSID of one of them.  An icon of 3G EDGE or GPRS will appear in the status bar at the top of the screen once the iPad connects to the internet through Mobile Data Network. The 3G functionality can still be used in case you have changed your location and are out of the usual mobile network coverage. For this purpose, you will need to turn the Data Roaming on. This will cost you the roaming charges. If you want to prevent yourself from these charges, turn the Data Roaming off.

Change your Mobile Network Data usage by selecting Settings, then Cellular Data and click on the View Account. The Mobile Data Settings depend on the carrier you are using and vary with it. There is no specific service provider to be used for iPad. You can get yourself signed up with the service provider of your own choice.

Please note that 3G data usage may cost you a lot of money. So if you do not have an unlimited 3G data plan, do read our guide to make your 3G data usage efficient.

How To Combine Safari’s URL and Search Bars with Safari Omnibar

The combined URL and search bar is one of the best things in the user interface of Google’s Chrome browser. In Chrome a single input bar provides both the URL and Search bar functions. Chrome is smart enough to distinguish the difference between a URL and a search query.

Although by default Safari has a separate Search and URL bar. However, the Omnibar for Safari allows the users to combine Safari’s search bar and URL bar into one searchable input and strip away the spare search box and simplify the browser’s interface. In this article we explain how you can combine Safari’s URL and Search bars with Safari Omnibar.

Safari Search URL Omnibar

How To Combine Safari’s URL and Search Bars with Safari Omnibar

Safari’s Omnibar works with different versions of Safari like 5 and 5.1. It also works for Mac OS X 10.6 and OS X 10.7. It is a SIMBL plugin but the installer itself also includes SIMBL.

You can download the Omnibar here. It is free and open source. All you need to do is to quit Safari, then run the pkg installer. The Omnibar will start working upon the next launch of browser with the search bar hidden on its own.

Uninstall Omnibar

Once you have decided that you don’t want Omnibar on Safari anymore, go to the following path:

/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

Remove ‘SafariOmnibar.bundle’, or if you want to merge these steps into a single string, issue the following command from command line:

rm /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/SafariOmnibar.bundle

You don’t have to delete the complete SIMBL plugin folder because the apps like Maximizer for Lion and Visor requires SIMBL in order to work.
